Mark Helberg, Head Coach
In his ninth year at James River, Coach Helberg enjoys one of the highest winning percentages in the region (76%). Coach Helberg was an assistant at Monacan for two years before joining the Rapids. A graduate and standout wrestler of Longwood University, Coach Helberg is a three-time VA state collegiate champ, a national qualifier (ranked fifth in the nation as a senior), and is listed fourth on the all-time win list. After graduating from Longwood, Coach Helberg remained in Farmville and served as the assistant coach for a year. In high school (Osbourn Park HS, Manassas, VA), Coach Helberg placed third in the state at 189lbs. Coach Helberg lives in Henrico County with wife Kelly and their 2 children.
Tony Yonta , Asst. Coach
Coach Yonta graduated from Tappan Zee High School in 1978 where he played football, baseball and wrestled. While wrestling, he earned the Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award presented by the U.S. Army for outstanind performance. He earnedhis degree from Manhattan College in 1984 and has his Masters in education. He has over 23 years of coaching experience. He lives in Midlothian with his wife, daughter and two sons.
Bobby Holliday, Asst. Coach
Coach Holliday graduated from Herndon HS as a two-time state qualifier, District and Regional Champ and 4th in the state as a Junior. In college, Coach Holliday wrestled for Appalachian State for two years before transferring to Longwood University. Coach Holliday is a Web Designer with UNOS and lives in Midlothian with his wife Susan and their 2 children.
James Riley, Asst. Coach
Returning to James River to coach football and wrestling, Coach Riley was a Central Region runner-up and Dominion District Champion wrestler. After high school, Coach Riley pursued his football career by attending Hampden-Sydney College (class of 2005) on a football scholarship.
Matthew Cohen, Asst. Coach
In his forth year at James River, Coach Cohen is in his second season with the Rapids wrestling team. Cohen is currently a math teacher and the Roller Hockey and PIE Club sponsors at James River. Cohen was a two-sport athlete (Ice Hockey and Soccer) at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York (Class of 2001).
Samuel F. McNeil III, Asst. Coach
Sam McNeil, the voice of Rapids Wrestling and resident poet, will be joining us again this year (in a more official capacity). Coach McNeil will be helping implement a new training routine that he has designed as well as taking on some of the fund-raising responsibilities.
